HealthX and RosterLab Partner on Initial Rollout of AI-Powered Healthcare Rostering Across New Zealand

RosterLab is beginning a new partnership with HealthX, Health New Zealand’s digital innovation programme, to evaluate how AI-powered healthcare rostering can improve roster quality, support clinician wellbeing, and reduce administrative burden across healthcare services.

The collaboration follows an introduction facilitated by Diana Siew from MedTechIQ, who invited RosterLab to present to HealthX in late 2025 as part of HealthX’s search for innovative, clinically driven digital solutions that could be rapidly deployed within the health system.

Following an assessment process, HealthX selected RosterLab to participate in this programme spanning multiple workforce groups and clinical settings.

The rollout will initially include Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) services at Counties Manukau, Waikato, Starship and Waitematā. Further groups from Starship will also be participating, including Senior Medical Officers in their emergency department, cardiac specialists and more departments across selected services.

RosterLab’s platform uses optimisation technology and AI-assisted workforce management tools to help healthcare organisations build high-quality rosters that balance operational requirements with staff preferences, fatigue management, skill mix, compliance obligations and workforce wellbeing.

The rollout will be delivered through a structured implementation programme designed to move from initial scoping and stakeholder alignment through to live roster deployment and ongoing support. Implementations can run in parallel across multiple sites, allowing several healthcare services to be onboarded simultaneously.

“What has stood out most is how much clinicians and roster coordinators care about getting this right,” said Daniel Ge, Co-founder of RosterLab.

“Rostering affects people’s day-to-day lives - their weekends, their recovery time, their family commitments and their sense of fairness at work. Seeing teams engage so deeply with improving that experience has been incredibly encouraging.”

The rollout will focus on evaluating how improved healthcare rostering can support better roster quality and work-life balance while reducing the administrative burden associated with creating and maintaining complex healthcare schedules.

Healthcare scheduling remains one of the most challenging operational tasks within the health system. Roster coordinators must balance workforce shortages, leave requests, fatigue considerations, qualifications, union requirements and service demand, often relying on manual processes and spreadsheets.

By bringing together HealthX’s innovation mandate and RosterLab’s workforce optimisation technology, the partnership aims to explore how modern digital tools and AI-powered rostering software can help healthcare teams spend less time managing rosters and more time focusing on patient care.
